About Alder & Oak Dental Studio

A dental studio built around the plan, not the pitch.

Alder & Oak opened in 2011 on NE Ashgrove Street in Portland. Dr. Nora Whitfield started it after years of watching patients get handed an estimate in a hurry. The studio does it the other way round: scan first, plan in writing, then treat, with the same small team from the extraction to the final crown. (503) 555-0173.

The Alder & Oak Dental Studio building on NE Ashgrove Street in Portland, pale oak and glass among young trees

The studio

Eleven people, a garden of young trees and a lot of daylight.

The studio is a single-storey building with a wall of glass, three treatment rooms and a waiting room with oak benches. The studio is named for the two trees we planted at the front when we opened. They are taller than the sign now, and a good reminder that the best results here take time.

We are a general practice with a focus on implants and restorative work. We place and restore implants, make crowns, bridges and dentures, and do simple extractions. We do not claim a dental specialty, and when a case needs an oral surgeon, such as a complex bone graft or an impacted tooth, we say so and work with them.

Our rules are short. Show the plan first. Put every phase and estimate in writing. Keep the same people in the room.

The clinical team

Two dentists and a hygienist.

How the studio works

What we promise, and what we do not.

  • You see the plan first: an exam, a 3D scan and a conversation, then every phase and estimate in writing.
  • One team, start to finish: the same dentists and hygienist from the extraction to the crown.
  • We say what we refer: complex grafts, sinus work and impacted teeth go to an oral surgeon, and we stay involved.
  • We do not promise a number of years. How long an implant lasts depends on bone, gums, bite and care, and we explain the factors instead.
  • We work with most major PPO plans and offer third-party financing.
